Information to the Mandrel Bending Machine

The Tools 
 
 
(1) Clamping unit: 
The clamps are delivered depending on requirements with smooth od. Corrugated surface.
 
(2) Thrust bearing: 
To support the bending process, you need a thrust bearing. For thick-walled tubes using counter rollers. Thin-walled ...
 
(3) bending mandrels: 
Bending mandrels support the outside of the tube while bending. Bending mandrels are responsible for the ovality of the Tube and prevent limited wrinkling. 
 
(4) Bending tool: 
The bending tool defines the bending radius of  the tube. For example, for a 42 mm tube R = 42 x 2 = 84 mm. 
 
(5) Rigid Mandrel: 
Rigid mandrels are used for thick-walled pipes and large bending radii. 
 
(6) ball mandrel / mandrel members: 
Ball mandrels have at the end of the rigid mandrel, one or more movable balls. Thus, the mandrel supports the tube even deeper in the bow. With ball mandrels thin-walled tubes are bent with small bending radii. The smaller the bending radius and the thin-walled tube, the more balls are used. When using ball mandrels seamless pipes or tubes with smoothed weld are required. 
 
(7) wrinkle: 
If, wrinkles accure while bending with a mandrel, the use of a wiper die is necessary. Wiper die´s do not smooth out wrinkle, but prevent the formation of wrinkles. You can often dispense with the use of a wiper die when annealed tubes are bent.

Mandrel bending 
 
 
When mandrel bending the tube is pushed over the mandrel into the bending machine and clamped between bending tool and clip. The bending head rotates about the bending axis and bends the tube in the bending tool. The thrust bearing, the tube is supported during the bending operation. 
 
The mandrel bending process smallest bending radii can be manufactured with best quality bow. Mandrel bending machines can - depending on the material - bend radii from 1.5 x pipe outer diameter specific. 
 
The thinner the tube and the smaller the bending radius, the more complex are the bending tools. For the bending operation different mandrels can be used. 
 
This tube was bent with a mandrel bending machine. It is a so-called D 2 bend. In this case, the bending radius of the tool is two times the diemeter of the tube.

Dimensions are always up to chamfer neuttralen.

There is also the possibility of bending tubes with a bending radius of 1.5 × D. 
 
The tube should be Annealed! Standard tube is very brittle and harder and these two properties favor the formation of wrinkles at the bend.
